Not approved by the ACLU.

He is three.  He goes two mornings a week to a very small, private preschool.  We live in the south.  Glenn Beck has very high ratings here.

These are not excuses…but come on..this is cute.

I am really, really sorry to any Native American readers.  I know your ancestors never wore necklaces made out of froot loops, or vests made out of paper bags.   But the cuteness?  Surely we agree on that right?

While we are offending people, Hey, Peta?   Yeah, they were singing a song about killing Mr. Turkey in a most violent way.  The Son thinks the song was about a BOAT and arrow.  Not that he sang it.  No, he just stood there, and you guessed it.  Looked cute.

VERY cute! I love that they all had names like Brave Thunder.

You know, I was there and didn’t notice the names on their vests. I suppose because I was busy watching him carefully balance the head dress trying very hard not to lose it as he walked. Unfortunately, it did come off as they marched in. I chalked it up to the fact that he’d lost 2/3’s of his hair after it had been sized to his head.

Brave Thunder….HMMM, I wonder if the teachers gave thought to the names they were given. He’s certainly fearless and frequently noisy.

Still feel a bit embarassed by the size of his contingent to watch the 3 song program. Seven people may have been too much….but, I’m not volunteering to be one of those that don’t attend future events.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

In some Native American families it is almost like dressing up in blackface. I hate that they still do this. I was always aware of it since I am Native American, yet I really don’t think the rest of the “white” public realizes how offensive it really is. Perhaps we are not as outspoken about it as African Americans are about blackface. Hurm.

That said – I dunno what I will do when Bella gets to be of age to do said things. I remember being in the 3rd grade and a teacher making me put on a headdress and prance around.

Teaching kindergarten these past two years, I’ve learned that there is a whole lotta “politically incorrect” going on in schools, none of which I recognized as a student. We did the paper bag vests and headbands, too, and I cringed the whole time. Maybe next year I’ll take on the task of convincing about 18 other teachers to teach the true story of Thanksgiving (vs. the fairy tale) and to lay off the Native American stereotypes…my own laziness prevented it this year, and now I feel guilty. Elizabeth’s comment about it being like blackface made me cringe and feel 800 times more shameful, even!

In any case, The Son looked freaking adorable!
