She only looks at the pictures.

December 3rd, 2008

Today is my MMiL’s birthday, but she told me she only comes here to look at pictures of The Son, so I will put up some cute ones and we can talk about her and she will never know.

I really do love my MMiL.   Not just for the obvious reasons like she raised my husband and is an awesome grandmother to my son, but because I like her for the person she is.  She is so incredibly smart, and I think everyone in the states calls her up or emails her when they have an education question.  She is a real Christian, but not just a static one, I feel like I have really seen her grow in her faith just in the past year.

She is so incredibly generous that she would give anything she had to anybody who needed it, and we will not even begin to talk about how kind she is to animals.  I can think of a 107 year old dalmation and a deaf mutt that could tell you volumes about that.

She is also funny,  she has that intelligent, dry sense of humor I love, but can also giggle at a well told pun.  She is a good mixture of being a tom boy (you should hear her  favorite movies–she hates The Sound of Music!) and a feminine lady (she once fixed the plunging neckline of a dress I was wearing while it was still on my body minutes before a wedding. In heels!  With a corsage!)

We like the same books, and swap thought provoking biographies and bodice ripping novels back and forth all the time.  Next she gets Wicked and I get Twilight.

She is open to sharing advice about The Son if I need it, but never gives it unsolicited.  She does not even roll her eyes at me when I refuse to put anything in his room that is not nautically themed.  Well, maybe she does a little, but she hides it well.

I know that I can trust her at anytime with my son and that she will never ever let him do dangerous things…like climb trees, or swing way too high.

When The Husband and I got married we lived in a different town from both sets of parents, and while I did like her….I really did not know her.  I really wanted to call her Mom and FFiL Dad, but it always got stuck on my tongue and never came out right.  I guess my heart felt bad since I have such great parents, no matter what my brain was saying.  I kinda gave up and just called her by her first name instead.  It could have been worse–I could have been calling her Mrs. Huckablog like legions of seventh graders out there.  Now, I call her Gigi more than anything else, it is what The Son calls her, and is a good fit of a loving nickname for me too.

I think she does read thehuckablog when she can and just scans it for new pictures daily, I mean come on and look at this kid.  That is probably what most of you do.

That’s okay.  Even if she never knows it, I do love her, and even better I love her not because I have to, but because I just do.  Happy birthday Gigi.

Pardon me as I type through my tears.

When my eldest son announced his engagement, I merely hoped for a good relationship with my future daughter-in-law and that she wouldn’t dislike me. I could never have imagined the magnitude of God’s gift that He bestowed to me through her.

HeyYou is such a smart, thoughtful, and loving young woman and proof that, “Youth is” NOT “wasted on the wrong people”.

(Pardon me for that line–I couldn’t resist referencing my favorite movie. Bonus points to those of you who can guess it withOUT asking HeyYou or TheHusband.)

Thank you for your eloquence and generosity of penmanship…and for the beautiful pics of our beloved little boy.

    All my love,
    MMiL

MMIL – I want those bonus points!

George doesn’t kiss Mary fast enough, and the grumpy old man on the porch says, “Aw, youth is wasted on the wrong people.”

    It’s from a movie I also adore – “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

As for Hey You, The Husband and The Son…aren’t they perfect for each other! The two older Huckablogs’ love for The Son is so obvious and yet strikingly beautiful. I’ve not seen many families who seem to mesh so well, and yet remain such unique individuals.

Oh, and happy birthday MMIL (by the way, what’s the extra “M” for?)

And Hey You, those pics of The Son are adorable! MMIL isn’t the only one who likes the pictures, so keep those coming! Though I also like your more thought-provoking posts, so just keep posting whatever you want, you’re doing a great job!!!

Happy birthday Marvelous Mother-in-Law!! Hope it was a great day for you? BTW, did read the entire Twilight saga, or just the first book? I am on book 3 (eclipse) now, and am enjoying the stories so far. I’ve read some spoilers online, so I kind of know what happens later in the series (I don’t really like surprises). I’d like to be able to seriously discuss the series, but the only other person I know that’s read the books is totally ga-ga over Edward, so of course she loved them. Anyway, hope you had a great birthday, and I hope you will LOVE Wicked. I gave it to Hey You several years ago as soon as I had finished it. I absolutely knew that she would love it as much as I have. There are also two sequels out (Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men). Enjoy!!

  4. Hey You on December 4, 2008 3:38 pm

I am really looking forward to Twilight, CAT has read them as well. And also, OMG A NEW WICKED BOOK?!! I read Son of a Witch the month it came out so must go find the new one. Have you read it already? I AM GOING TO HASTINGS RIGHT NOW!! sorry for screaming.

  5. Ang on December 4, 2008 4:59 pm

Yes, I have it (I found it at Borders before I even knew it had come out!) and I will refrain from commenting on it until you have read it. I don’t want to color your opinions. Let me know when you’ve finished it and we’ll chat. BTW, they just opened a Books-A-Million/Joe Muggs in the Big O. I want to go in there just for sentimental reasons…

Very good, ShoeShe. You indeed have the scene, the line, and the movie title correct. So, you not only get bonus points, but they will arrive in a platinum mounting. If you would like to upsize those bonus points, riddle me this: what 2 Sesame Street characters got their name from this movie and what jobs did their namesakes have? Oh…what is it that Mary hates that causes George to call her brainless?

The extra M stands for Marvelous, as Ang so appropriately stated in her response. I tacked that on in a facetious moment but love that HeyYou liked it and let it stay!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. This has truly been a very bittersweet week, so having your well wishes means more than you know.

Now…on to Twilight. Sorry, I’ve only read that one thus far. But New Moon is sitting waiting for me to begin. I’m going to check Eclipse out from my district’s library before Christmas break since I NEVER buy hardback books if I can help it. Hmmm…Edward. Well, since HeyYou has yet to read it, I think I’ll reserve my comments. HeyYou…how starting an online book club for us? (I would, but my Wiki is still in the “under construction” phase after 3 months so I’m afraid it wouldn’t get very far.)

Thanks, Ang, for reminding me to grab Twilight and take it to HeyYou tonight.
Well I’ll close with this question…what would you do with the moon if someone were to give it to YOU?

Oh…my next movie reference would probably involve Bumpkus’s hounds!
Thanks for such a fun post-post discussion!

PS: Grammy’s birthday is up next!

  8. ShoeShe on December 4, 2008 5:27 pm

MMIL, I’m ready to upsize my bonus points.

Popular belief is that “Sesame Street” characters Bert and Ernie were named after Frank Capra’s Bert the cop and Ernie the taxi driver in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Though I seem to remember a television interview with one of the “Sesame Street” writers, Jon Stone, at some point when I was in junior high (about the time I made the Bert and Ernie connection to IAWL), where he said that the names were purely coincidence, and that even Jim Henson had said prior to his death that the names did not come from IAWL. So I guess nobody can be sure since neither Stone nor Henson are with us anymore. All we have is hearsay.

As for what Mary hates that causes George to call her brainless…

I must admit that if I hadn’t watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” last night on DVD, I probably wouldn’t have remembered this, because it isn’t one of my favorite parts of the movie. But the scene is at the drugstore soda fountain. Mary orders her chocolate sundae without COCONUT. She hates coconut, and George calls her brainless.

You’re going to have to better than that to stump ShoeShe.

  9. MMIL on December 4, 2008 11:24 pm

Well, actually she hates….coco nutS! Another question…why does he think she’s brainless for not liking coco nuts?

As for the Bert and Ernie…I really don’t think it could have been coincidence. I believe that the names were kicking around in Henson’s sub-conscious memory. No matter what Henson ever said (or believed himself), I will never be convinced otherwise.

  10. MMIL on December 4, 2008 11:28 pm

ShoeShe…without looking….what decision did George make that kept him from becoming wealthy and why did he make that decision?

That’s the last question…otherwise, I think HeyYou may scalp me. But, since it was my birthday post, I decided to push my luck a little bit.

Now…everyone that has viewed the pics of this child, tell me how wonderfully marvelous you think he (and his mom) is.

  11. Ang on December 5, 2008 9:16 am

MMIL, I think you must have some sort of ESP going on. I was just thinking last night that an online book club would be an interesting idea. I saw the twilight movie before I read the book, so the book was kind of slow-going for me since I already knew what would happen. However, I read new moon in 3 days, and I’m halfway through eclipse.

  12. Ang on December 5, 2008 9:38 am

Oh, and there’s no way I could compete with MMIL and ShoeShe on the IAWL trivia. I can’t even tell you the last time I saw the movie all the way through.

  13. ShoeShe on December 5, 2008 10:33 am

    MMIL…

The reason George called her brainless was because of the exotic places that coconuts came from (like Fiji I think) and that if the National Geographic Society liked coconuts, then anyone with a brain should, because only smart people are in NGS…something like that!

As for the other George question…

George had grand dreams for what to do after high school that included exploring and getting out of Bedford Falls, but a family emergency forced him to do some soul searching. He wound up taking over his father’s Savings & Loan, and felt trapped by the responsibility of shouldering his family’s business.

As for why: He probably did it some out of obligation to his family or because he felt like he had to, but he also didn’t want Mr. Potter (the wealthy town schemer) to take it over.

As for an online book club, I think it’s a marvelous idea!!!

And, I’ve already noted how marvelous I think The Son and his mother (and let’s not forget his father) are, but just for kicks and grins, I’ll say it again: There are no words to express how truly awesome the Huckablog family is. They are full of love and life, which is evident in how kind and explorative The Son is at such an early age…a true gift!

  14. grammy on December 6, 2008 12:09 pm

Boy, I get busy for a few days and miss all this fun. IAWL is one of my favorites too. This made me want to watch it again. Maybe I’ll put it in while I decorate this afternoon.

I hope your birthday was a happy one MMIL. And, have a nice time at the circus with the rest of the Huckablogs to celebrate it this weekend.

As for the book club? I am so out of touch, I’ve not read a novel of any type for a very long time. I’d like to read Wicked, as in truth, once several years ago I found that book in our house (belonged to JHJ) and I took it to the used book store to sell without even looking at it or knowing it was a best seller. Of course, he was angry at me for selling his book. Come to think of it, I may be getting a reputation for that. You may recall I sold Hey You’s library book, The Grapes of Wrath, at the spring garage sale.

Regardless, perhaps it time I struck balance and found time for some leisure reading. A book club might be just the nudge I need.

  15. grammy on December 6, 2008 12:12 pm

I forgot to say….love the pics…..love the family.

  16. MMIL on December 8, 2008 11:32 pm

Well, yes, technically that is what kept George from “getting out” of Bedford Falls…obligation to his family. However, I was thinking a little more specifically of Wainwright and his offer to George for him to “get in the ground floor of plastics” (which did make whaz-is-name Wainwright a wealthy man–HeeHaw–). And, rather than continue the Wonderful life trivial pursuit any longer, the much-avoided-but-inevitable kissing of Mary made George drop the phone call and the rest “was history” (or not, once Clarence showed up).

I know the whole thing almost by heart even if I haven’t watched it yet tis year; guess that comes from those years of sharing its priceless life lessons with my 7th graders….6 periods a day!!

Grammy, it was a wonderful birthday. TheSon, in a lull in the circus action leaned over toward me, said, “TheSon Asleep…” closed his eyes and started fake snoring VERY LOUDLY. It was the best part of the entire night.

Hope your Birthday this weekend is every bit as fun and precious, Grammy.

I’ll “see” you ladies later…got to go get a few chapters of New Moon in before bedtime.

  17. MMIL on December 15, 2008 6:10 pm

Okay….New Moon has worn thin. Jacob’s okay, but the premise is well…you’ll see when you read it. Guess I’m not as into this teen-angst quadrilogy as I first thought I would be.

  18. grammy on December 18, 2008 8:56 am

MMIL, after he snored, did you? If so, I’ll bet he yelled, “WAKE UP, GIGI, WAKE UP!” I love it! When we got home from NC he was all about Grandpa. I didn’t even get a kiss from him.
