Just Hypothetically of course.

November 13th, 2008

Hey Internet! I have a hypothetical question for you. If you had a hypothetical dog…..one that was a yorkie mix, was female, about nine months old, and had been going by the name Molly, what would you name her? I, hypothetically of course, think the name Molly is too close to Polly, we have some friends who have a human child named Molly and think that she, hypothetically, needs a new name to match a new family.

I kind of like names that are in the whole Katydid, Pollywog, Skeeter (an outside cat we had for a few months) genre. You know, naturish, yet that can be shortened to a cute nickname. So far I have thought of Ladybird, Cricket, Butterfly, Flutterby, Robin, Guppie, Doodlebug, Mayfly, Grasshopper (which is BIL’s nickname for The Son, BTW), Stinkbug, Birdie, Cherry, Tilly, Tiddlewink, PussyWillow, Magpie, Sparrow, Acorn, Starling, Chickadee, Turtledove, Minnow, Primrose, Buttercup, and Radar O’Reilly, hypothetically.

This would be a picture of the hypothetical dog.

After a much needed bath. The hypothetical haircut and vet check will be tomorrow.

Okay, not hypothetical, but the truth, this dog needed a new home and we MAY be it. We are giving her until Sunday evening and will then make a decision. So far so good, The Husband’s allergies seem to be okay, but he has a cold so it is just to soon. The Son ADORES her, but he likes all dogs, she has not even made a peep at him. Can she bark I wonder? Katydid has been hiding under the guest bed since we brought little dog home. Right now the front runner name wise is Ladybird, nickname Birdie, followed by Magpie (but Maggie is my parents dog), or Chickadee. PLEASE give us your suggestions or your picks from the ones I listed.

She looks like she is wearing a toupee in the top photo. Hypothetically, don’t you think you should have talked to your dog sitter before thinking about adding another dog to the mix? How big is she? Its hard to tell.

My mom’s nick name for me when I was growing up was Molly Bob.

I like ShoeShe. It has a nice nature-ish ring to it.

Seriously…not Ladybird, because I’d have to nickname you Peggy Hill.

Of your choices, I’d go with Chickadee, though I like June Bug (which coincidentally would go nicely with Katydid).

BUGS: Bessbug, Firefly, Glowworm, June Bug, Ladybug, May Beetle, Mayfly, Springtail, Sunfly.

NATURE: Nova (Native American meaning “chases butterflies”), Florencia (Spanish meaning “blooming”) and Blossom (for my inner pre-teen of the 90s).

OTHER: Ance (Hebrew meaning “grace”) or Freira (Spanish meaning “sister”)

Mom, we will talk details about the why of why we have her later, she is about ten pounds.

ShoeShe JUNEBUG! Love it, that is in the top list now.

I like Tilly, she looks like a Tilly to me, I’m not a big fan of Junebug, but it is not my dog. I name all my animals weird things, so what do I know.

What do you guys think of Ellie-Mae? Or Ellie Mayfly? We are getting her groomed this morning, the bath last night did not even touch the smell. We had to keep her in the bathroom.

Oh, and The Husband is SICK! Maybe strep? Maybe a slight cold and he is just being a baby? Low grade fever and one side of his throat hurts. Any doctors out there to help the man with no health insurance?

I like Ellie May and Junebug. As far as the sickness goes, he will need to go to the Dr. for strep diagnosis, not to mention some antibiotics to keep from getting you and/or The Son sick as well. Strep can be contagious even weeks after the symptoms clear up if not properly treated. I had it a couple of years ago and all I had was a sore throat and it didn’t go away. It was so painful I could hardly swallow anything, and it kept me up at night. I think you should take him to the Dr. Some offices will give you a discount if you offer to pay in cash. It’s a thought.

I’m with Ang. Go to the doctor. Get antibiotics for The Husband. I’m on some now for a sinus infection (which coincidentally also included a sore throat because of the drainage). It’s just that icky time of year.

Ellie-Mae or Ellie Mayfly either one are pretty cute, but I still like Junebug. You could call her Junie (I’m having flashbacks to the movie “Benny & Joon,” which I adored in the early 90s).

She doesn’t so much look like a Tilly to me, though what do I know? I have only dachshunds, and only one of them has a German name (which is apparently a “requirement” that comes along with the breed…who knew!).

I’d go with whatever your family decides. You guys are the ones who are going to be living with her. Although, I might see which one rolls of The Son’s tongue the cutest.

If you want name overload, do a google search for Yorkie names. There’s a website that has cute dog names listed by breeds (and then sub-categorized by sex).

The Husband popped some Advil went to work. If he is still sick tonight, I will make him go to one of those doc in the box places.

Ellie is the name that seems to be sticking. Anybody know anything about crate training?

  11. Ang on November 14, 2008 12:35 pm

I know nothing about crate training, but if you want to talk litter boxes, I’m your girl. Google it!

  12. ShoeShe on November 14, 2008 12:38 pm

We crate trained Dach, but we did it opposite. My dachshunds sleep with humans and use the crate as an indoor bathroom facility for when it is too rainy, dark, late, cold, hot, snowy (or insert any other word that makes them seem like spoiled brats) to go outside. They will still do their thing outside, but they also use the indoor crate quite frequently (definitely during the day when nobody’s home with them).

I crate trained Darcy, but you are going to have a hard time due to certain circumstances.
