Good Idea, Bad Idea: the burnt to a crisp edition

August 7th, 2008

Good Idea: Taking advantage of a beautiful morning to take your toddler to the beach at a local state park.

Bad Idea: Not checking the web to see when beach opens for swimming. (Noon)

Good Idea: Killing time until you can swim by making sandcastles.

Bad Idea: Thinking you can make sandcastles with an (almost) two year old for an hour and a half. (Actual attention span? 30 minutes, tops.)

Good Idea: Bringing a picnic from home to save money.

Bad Idea: Not bringing a back up lunch for when the first lunch gets dropped in the sand.

Good Idea: Waiting for the lifeguard to (FINALLY!) appear so you can swim without being fined.

Bad Idea: Waiting to swim until it is nap time, and the sun is at its burniest.

Good Idea: Applying a high SPF sunscreen.

Very, Very Bad Idea: Asking your (almost) two year old to apply sunscreen to the places you can’t reach.

Good Idea: Aloe and Advil

Bad Idea: Going anywhere that requires a bra. (Anywhere past the front door for me)

Note: This is not my actual back; that would require posting a picture of my naked back on the internet, and therefore is not going to happen. This is, however, a good representation of how my back looks. Except it has grill marks on it like the hamburgers from burger king. No pickles though.

I totally understand the sunburn thing. Being at home all day, with ready access to the pool, I want to take advantage. I didn’t burn too badly, but I was sick of not having anyone around to apply sunscreen to my back, so I came up with a little invention. If you have a clothes hanger, a washcloth, and a couple of clothespins, you can fashion a lotion/sunscreen applicator (it also comes in handy for moisturizing said sunburn). Just pin the washcloth to one of the “wings” of the clothes hanger, then squirt lotion/sunscreen onto the washcloth and apply to those areas you can’t reach. Good luck.

The only thing worse than a natural sunburn is the self-inflicted burn I get in awkward spots when I lay in the tanning bed. Apparently different areas of my skin burn at different levels, which leads to striping (which is a bit odd). I’ve devised a system though…5 minutes on back in normal position…5 minutes on stomach with arms bent in front of me palms down…5 minutes on stomach with arms at side palms up. I’m not sure my system has scientific merit, though with a tank top and a pair of short shorts worn at all times in the tanning bed, my tan seems to be somewhat well blended…even in the spots covered by the tank and shorts.

Ocean Potion Instant Burn Relief Ice is the best for sunburns! http://www.opotion.com/cart/product_info.php?products_id=87
It works very well and is a life saver…or back saver. Anyways, it’s not too expensive and you can get it at good old Wally world. By the way, it’s a blue gel. Just so you don’t end up with plain aloe vera gel.

    Good Idea:
Going to the lake for a relaxing swim.

    Bad Idea:
Waiting until Daddy went to work.

So far, no skin peeling. But she’s started the itchy back syndrome, which is usually followed quickly by peeling skin.
